VP JD Vance Faces Backlash Over Comments on President Biden’s Cancer Diagnosis
Vice President JD Vance is under fire for comments he made following President Joe Biden’s recent prostate cancer diagnosis, announced on May 18. While leaders from both parties—including former President Donald Trump—offered messages of support, Vance’s reaction has been widely criticized as insensitive and politically motivated.
President Biden, 82, has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of hormone-sensitive prostate cancer that has spread to his bones. Despite the seriousness, his medical team says the condition is treatable with proper care. Trump, in an unexpected show of goodwill, issued a sympathetic statement wishing Biden a full and speedy recovery.
Vance, however, took a different approach. Rather than focusing on the president’s health, he used the moment to question Biden’s overall fitness for office and took aim at what he described as a lack of transparency about the president’s medical condition.
“We can pray for good health,” Vance said, “but also recognize that, if you’re not in good enough health to do the job, you shouldn’t be doing the job.”

His remarks quickly drew backlash from across the political spectrum, with critics accusing him of exploiting a personal health crisis for political gain. Many labeled the comments “tone-deaf” and “disrespectful,” especially when compared to Trump’s more restrained and respectful statement.
The White House has not responded directly to Vance’s comments, choosing instead to focus on President Biden’s treatment and recovery. In the meantime, the controversy has sparked renewed calls for more empathy and decency in political discourse.
